No. Automatic backup during an outage works independently of the app, and built-in LEDs show status and battery level so you are able to use it indepdently of the app if desired. However, the app adds a richer dashboard, insight into your unit, and remote control, plus advanced features like Time-of-Use (TOU) scheduling, power usage, capacity/time remaining, and notifications.
