Is there a way for me to estimate runtimes on Backup before owning one?

Yes, you can apply some basic calculations to arrive at rough runtimes for appliances or devices you might want to run off of Backup. That said, those estimates are always for informational purposes only and are subject to real-world environments, age of product, if the device has an occasional compressor that turns on, etc. But let's get into it!

For devices the require continuous power (like a fridge, lamp, router, etc), you'll want to look at the nameplate directly on the device or the tech specs in a manual or product page: this will give you a wattage rating which is the power it will draw from Backup to stay running. Let's say you had a device that drew 100 watts (100W). With a 1500 watt-hour (1.5kWh) Core unit, you would divide that 1500 watt hours by 100W, leave you with ~15 hours of available runtime (a little less than 15 hours because of standard conversion loss, but that's a topic for another day).

For devices that need to recharge their own internal battery, you need to look at the size of the battery. Most rechargeable devices come in milliamp hours, so you'll need to do some calcuating to get to watt hours (a quick online search can typically help you). From there, you'd take the size of your intended Backup configuration (1500 watt hours, 3000 watt hours, 4000 watt hours, etc) and divide it by the watt hours of your device, arriving at the number of times you could recharge that device with your power supply.

Having devices plugged into Backup and viewing runtimes in the app will always give you the most dynamic and up to date insights, but this is a good rough tool to see if you have your bases covered.
